The Clan Restaurant

When I was back in Singapore for my winter break (July 2012), I tried out a new entrant into the already-crowded restaurant scene – The Clan Restaurant, which aims to present the best of European cooking infused with a Japanese influence. The Clan’s located on Bukit Pasoh Road, opposite Andre Chiang’s Andre.

If you’ve been to Dozo at Valley Point or Tao’s Restaurant at POMO in Selegie, you’ll be familiar with the concept of the restaurant.  This is of course, not surprising since Executive Chef Ken Teo ran the kitchens of both restaurants for the last 5 years.

Prices at The Clan are extremely affordable – A 5-course lunch costs S$42.80++ and a 6-course dinner costs S$62.80++. There are at least 5 selections for each course (with the exception of the starter – so that’s quite a few options to choose from if you’re going in a group.

JAAN

During the recent Easter study break, I flew back to Singapore on a red-eye flight and the first meal (after a few hours on my own bed catching up on sleep) that I had, was dinner at JAAN. And let me just say, the view up from the 70th storey of the Equinox Complex does blow you away; Singapore has such a magnificent skyline, I’m confident that you’ll be hard-pressed not to agree with me! Of course, it’s just another reminder of the beautiful country that we live in. To be honest, the view is probably the key selling point of JAAN. The food is good but safe. Perhaps, too safe.

Small bites were served upon being seated. In the photograph above, from front-to-back, you have Sesame crusted potato croquet, Grilled chicken skin, and Smoked eel parfait topped pickled apple gelee.

By the way, JAAN is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word for ‘bowl’. I digress.

Now, let’s get down to the details.

Sky on 57

Christmas came and went, then New Year’s arrived with a bang. Before we realize it, Chinese New Year is just on the horizon. To all my readers and friends celebrating the festivities, here’s wishing all of us a bountiful new year ahead!

I was invited to the press luncheon of the launch of the Lunar New Year Luncheon Menu at Sky on 57 last Monday however as I was in Hong Kong over the weekend, I was not able to attend. From what I see on the blog posts of some of the bloggers who attended the luncheon, it was quite the event with Kagoshima Governor Yuichiro Ito gracing the luncheon. Chef Justin Quek and his restaurant, Sky on 57, was accorded a Certification of Recommendation from the governor himself. The Certificate of Recommendation is an affirmation that the dining establishment is serving up worthy ingredients from Kagoshima.

However, all was not lost, for I tried the Lunar New Year Luncheon menu last Friday. Of course, it was good that work ended early and that Marina Bay Sands was a mere 5 minute taxi ride away.

Our Korner

Our Korner - Scarlet Hotel (1)

What used to be Desire is now Our Korner. But, I’m not complaining! Located in the boutique hotel, The Scarlet, near Ann Siang Road in Chinatown, gone is the fine dining atmosphere of Desire and has been replaced with a more contemporary bistro appearence.

The menu offers mainly comfort food with the usual favourites as well as dishes with a local flavour infused in them such as laksa clam chowder, chili crab sliders, curry-chicken pizza and a dessert with Horlicks ice-cream.

To get the ball rolling, we had the Laksa Clam Chowder. Both of us tried it and to be honest, it tasted really good. It was raining that evening; So, the chowder was perfect!

The laksa chowder was more flavoursome than spicy per-se, so it should suit most taste buds.

C Restaurant in the Sky, CBD (Perth)

Tasmanian smoked salmon and Neufchatel cheese rolls, red capsicum dressing

One of the to-go restaurants in Perth is The C Restaurant in the Sky on St. Georges Terrace.

If it’s not for the food, go for the view! It”s not picturesque in any dictionary, but still, it’s a view.

Well, you see – It provides one a 360 degree look of Perth city(It’s a revolving restaurant ala Prima Restaurant). The view, is quite good too – considering that much of Perth is low rise and thus being perched on the 33rd storey of an office building does have it perks.

Bazin

Forenote: C.Y., my guest blogger, dined here as a guest of Bazin.

Bazin is a swanky new restaurant that opened in the Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Bar area.  Overlooking Boat Quay, Raffles and Esplanade, this area spots one of the best views for dining in both day and night.  Marina Bay Sands Waterfront Bar has 5 F&B outlets, all with their own uniqueness.

Bazin serves an Euro-Oriental menu with special creations like Thai Green Curry Pizza and Seafood Wasabi Pizza (which I tried and I loved), an extensive list of bar snacks and also long lists of liqueurs, liquors, cocktails, beer and wine.  The ambience is best defined as contemporary with a touch of European quaintness to its decor.  It is also one of the places to view the nightly light and water show – Wonder Full.
